Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially unveiled Eric Chelle as the new head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The unveiling ceremony held at the media conference room of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja marked a new chapter in Nigerian football as Chelle assumes the role of leading the national team through a critical period.

Chelle’s appointment was announced last Tuesday by the NFF, confirming the 47-year-old former Mali international as the 42nd substantive head coach of the Super Eagles.

His appointment comes at a time when the team’s performance has raised concerns, with the Super Eagles currently in fifth place in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They have managed only three points from four matches and are yet to register a win in the campaign.

Speaking at the event, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to turn the tide for the Super Eagles.

“Eric Chelle’s experience, both as a player and a coach, makes him the ideal candidate to bring renewed energy and focus to our team. We believe he has what it takes to guide the Super Eagles back to their rightful place in global football,” Gusau said.

Chelle, who enjoyed a successful playing career as a defender, is no stranger to high-pressure assignments.

His immediate task will be to revive Nigeria’s faltering World Cup qualifying campaign, with the next match scheduled for February.

Additionally, he is expected to lead the home-based Super Eagles in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Ivory Coast, a tournament showcasing the best talents from African leagues.

“It is an honor to be entrusted with this role,” Chelle stated during his first address as head coach. “Nigeria is a footballing powerhouse, and the potential of the Super Eagles is immense.”

“My focus is on building a cohesive team that will make Nigerians proud, both in the immediate and long-term future.”

The new coach’s unveiling has sparked optimism among fans and stakeholders, with many hoping his tenure will bring an end to the team’s recent struggles.”
