The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Executive Committee has officially announced the appointment of Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
The decision, made following the recommendation of the NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee, was finalized during a meeting held in Abuja on January 2, 2025, and formally endorsed on January 7, 2025.
Chelle, 47, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as the head coach of Mali’s senior national team.
His coaching journey has also seen him manage clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.

As a former professional footballer in France, Chelle played for notable clubs including Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.
Born in Côte d’Ivoire to a French father and a Malian mother, Chelle was eligible to represent Côte d’Ivoire, France, and Mali in his playing career. He ultimately chose Mali, earning five international caps before retiring.
Chelle’s tenure as Mali’s head coach from 2022 to 2024 was marked by significant achievements, including leading the Aiglons to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
Under his guidance, Mali narrowly missed a semi-final berth, losing 2-1 after extra time to the eventual tournament champions.

Chelle’s appointment is effective immediately, with his primary task being to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
The Super Eagles face crucial Matchday 5 and 6 qualifiers in March, which will be the first test of Chelle’s leadership.
Fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching as Éric Sékou Chelle takes on the challenge of revitalizing the Super Eagles and restoring Nigeria’s dominance on the global football stage.
