Security Tightens As Court Resumes Kano Emirates Hearing

The Federal High Court complex, Court Road, Kano, witnessed heightened security as the hearing on the Kano Emirates tussle commenced today.

Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) were heavily present in and around the facility, ensuring order and restricting movement in the area.

The court had been set to hear a restraining order against the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano by the state government.

Grassroots Parrot reported the adjournment of the sitting caused by the nationwide strike embarked on by the Labour Union over the new minimum wage, which affected the initial proceedings scheduled for last Thursday.

Previously, Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court in Kano had issued an order preventing the Kano State Government from enforcing the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Law.

This ruling was in response to an application filed by Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate.

As proceedings resumed, security measures were intensified to prevent any potential unrest. Police and DSS operatives strategically positioned their vehicles around the court, leading to the diversion of traffic from Court Road to Zoo Road and the Gyadi-Gyadi area.

The current crisis in Kano State erupted two weeks ago when Governor Abba Yusuf deposed Emir Bayero and four other first-class Emirs of Rano, Bichi, Karaye, and Gaya.

Governor Yusuf then reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, following the repeal of the law used by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje to depose and exile Sanusi in 2020.

Sanusi, who was the 14th Emir of Kano, had been removed from his position by Ganduje’s administration on grounds of alleged insubordination.

Following his deposition, Bayero was installed as his successor, and Sanusi was exiled to Awe, a rural community in Nasarawa State.

In an effort to reinstate Sanusi, the Kano State House of Assembly, dominated by the New Nigeria Peoples Party, passed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024.

This new law replaced the Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019 and dissolved the five emirate councils—Bichi, Karaye, Gaya, Rano, and Kano—that had been created by Ganduje.
