Nationwide Strike Disrupts Court Sitting Over Kano Emirate Tussle

The nationwide strike over the minimum wage dispute has disrupted the Federal High Court sitting in Kano, affecting the hearing on the restraining order regarding the reinstatement of Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano.

Last Thursday, Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court in Kano issued an order preventing the Kano State Government from enforcing the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Law.

The order came in response to an application by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate, who raised constitutional and jurisdictional issues.

The court scheduled a hearing on these fundamental rights applications for June 3, 2024. However, the ongoing strike by organized labor has brought all court activities to a halt. On Monday, SolaceBase reporters found the Federal High Court gates locked and no signs of usual court proceedings.

A credible source at the court informed that, in light of the strike, the court has arranged for the case to proceed virtually. Parties involved in the suit have been sent a link to attend the virtual hearing scheduled for 12:00 noon on Monday.

The nationwide strike, called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has significantly impacted various sectors, including the judiciary, as workers demand a more substantial minimum wage increase.

The ongoing legal battle over the Kano Emirate Council Repeal Law has generated considerable public interest, with the reinstatement of Sanusi II as Emir being a focal point of the dispute. The virtual hearing will determine the next steps in this high-profile case amidst the nationwide labor strike.
