The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed workers across the country to boycott the services of major telecommunications providers—MTN, Airtel, and Glo—following the implementation of a 50% tariff hike.
The directive was issued on Wednesday in a statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja.
According to the statement, the boycott will commence at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 13, 2025, and will last from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM daily until the end of February 2025.

The NLC also called on other Nigerians to join the action in protest against what it described as an “arbitrary tariff hike.”
“The CWC demands an immediate reversal of the tariff hike, which took effect today, and insists that the companies revert to the previous tariff until the committee completes its deliberations and reaches a conclusive agreement,” the statement read.
Criticising the government for failing to protect Nigerians from corporate exploitation, the labour union warned that a failure to reverse the tariff increase by February 29, 2025, would lead to a full-scale telecom shutdown from March 1, 2025.

The congress also urged civil society groups and the general public to support the protest against what it called exploitative economic policies.
The decision follows MTN’s move to implement the tariff hike, despite a call from the House of Representatives for the federal government to suspend the increase.
The development has sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians expressing concerns over the rising cost of living and the burden of additional expenses on consumers.
