The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has expressed his willingness to accept any law approved by the Sokoto State Government.
The Sultan made this commitment on Tuesday during a public hearing on the amendment bill for the Local Government Law 2009, held at the Mini Chamber of the Sokoto State House of Assembly.
Represented by Dr. Muhammadu Jabbi Kilgori, a kingmaker and member of the Sultanate Council, the Sultan conveyed his support for the legislative process.

The proposed amendment, if passed, would transfer the power to appoint or dethrone traditional rulers from the Sultan to the state executive.
Sokoto State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Nasiru Mohammed Binji, explained that this change aligns with Section 5, Subsection 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic, which vests the power to appoint district and village heads, as well as other traditional institution personnel, in the executive branch.
Binji emphasized that the constitution clearly stipulates that the power to appoint district or village heads lies with the executive, and the state governor exercises this power.

He stated that the amended law would enhance the general administration of local government and chieftaincy matters in Sokoto State.
“The new law, if amended, will improve the overall administration of local government and traditional institutions,” Binji said.
