Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina delivered an inspiring performance at the 73rd Miss Universe Competition, finishing as the first runner-up during the grand finale held at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City.
The final moments of the competition, which concluded early Sunday morning, saw an electrifying face-off between Adetshina and Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig.
The global pageant, celebrated for showcasing the intelligence, elegance, and talents of women worldwide, reached its climax as Theilvig was crowned Miss Universe 2024, succeeding Nicaragua’s Sheynnis Palacios.
In a post on Instagram, the organizers highlighted the dramatic finale: “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two incredible women, one unforgettable moment.”

Adetshina’s performance captivated judges and audiences alike, earning her widespread admiration. Her journey to the Miss Universe stage was not without its controversies.
Earlier this year, she withdrew from the Miss South Africa 2024 contest—despite advancing to the finals—following concerns raised by some South Africans over her nationality.
She later represented Taraba State in Nigeria, where she secured the title of Miss Universe Nigeria, paving her way to the global competition.

Adetshina’s achievement adds to Nigeria’s proud history in international beauty pageants. In 2001, Agbani Darego made history as the first Black African to win the Miss World title.
