Nnamdi Kanu in court

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of multiple terrorism charges.

Justice James Omotosho, who delivered the judgment on Thursday, held that Kanu would serve a life sentence on counts one, four, five, and six, opting against the death penalty sought in the charges.

The judge further imposed a 20-year jail term on Count Three and an additional five years on Count Seven. Both sentences come without the option of a fine.

Justice Omotosho ruled that all sentences will run concurrently, effectively placing Kanu behind bars for life.

“Having considered the totality of evidence and the need to exercise judicial mercy, I hereby sentence the convict to life imprisonment on the major counts, with all sentences running concurrently,” the judge declared.
