Former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), has described the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State that claimed over 200 lives as a tragedy “ordained by God” and “beyond human powers.”

Babangida made the remarks while receiving a Sallah homage at his Hilltop residence in Minna from a delegation of the Niger State Government, led by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba. The former leader expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which he called one of the worst in recent memory.

“What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate, but it is ordained by Allah. It is beyond our powers, and this is why we should all continue to pray for the souls of the deceased,” Babangida stated solemnly.

The devastating flood has left hundreds of families displaced, properties worth millions of naira destroyed, and livelihoods shattered. Survivors continue to recount harrowing stories of loss.

Deputy Governor Garba, in his response to Babangida, acknowledged the former president’s concern and described him as a “pillar of hope” for both the state and the nation.

“We are aware that the general is disturbed by the recent incident in Mokwa. What we need now is prayers from everyone. Your fatherly role remains critical to us, especially in times like this,” Garba said.

Babangida also commended the administration of Governor Umaru Bago for its developmental strides and urged that such efforts be sustained despite the tragedy.

The Mokwa flood has also brought economic and health challenges to the fore. Commercial activities have ground to a halt, and the Mokwa General Hospital is overwhelmed with patients suffering from injuries and possible waterborne infections.

The government has warned of the fear of an outbreak of diseases due to the lack of clean water and power supply in the affected areas.

The Niger State Government has pledged to launch a full investigation into the root causes of the flood and take preventive measures to avert future occurrences. Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations and well-meaning Nigerians are being called upon to support ongoing relief efforts.
