President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday announced sweeping changes in the military high command, sacking the service chiefs and appointing their replacements.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, said the action was part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.
According to the statement, President Tinubu named General Olufemi Oluyede, a former Chief of Army Staff as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), replacing General Christopher Musa, who has been in office since 2023.

Other key appointments include:
Major-General W. Shaibu – Chief of Army Staff
Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke – Chief of Air Staff
Rear Admiral I. Abbas – Chief of Naval Staff
Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye – retained as Chief of Defence Intelligence
The President’s latest action, sources say, is aimed at reinvigorating the armed forces and improving coordination among the different service branches amid persistent security challenges across the country.
However, Grassroots Parrot gathered that the sweeping changes will trigger mass retirements among senior officers within the military establishment.
Traditionally, officers who are contemporaries of the outgoing service chiefs retire once their juniors are elevated to higher command positions.

The newly appointed service chiefs belong to Course 40 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), succeeding their predecessors from Course 39, including the new CDS, General Oluyede.
Under long-standing military convention, senior officers cannot serve under their juniors, meaning that several generals and senior officers from Course 39 — and even some from Course 40 — are expected to bow out.
Reports indicate that members of Course 39 still hold strategic positions such as Principal Staff Officers at Service Headquarters and Commanders of tri-service institutions.
Military insiders revealed to Leadership Weekend that the latest reshuffle could see over 50 senior officers voluntarily retiring from service to make way for the new leadership structure.

Security Analysts Hail Tinubu’s Move
Security analysts have described the development as a strategic step by President Tinubu to inject fresh energy and ideas into the armed forces.
They noted that the President’s decision could bring renewed discipline, modern operational tactics, and better inter-agency collaboration as Nigeria battles multiple security threats, including insurgency, banditry, and oil theft.
The newly appointed service chiefs are expected to resume immediately and begin the process of repositioning their respective branches for greater efficiency and national defence readiness.
