Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, has likened Donald Trump’s recent U.S. electoral victory to his own dramatic return to power in 2011.

In a tweet extending congratulations to the newly elected U.S. president, Kwankwaso celebrated Trump’s resilience, pointing to the symbolic importance of a political comeback after a period of loss.

Kwankwaso’s message of congratulations highlighted Trump’s success as a “historic political comeback,” reminding him of his own journey back to Kano’s governorship.

After a loss in 2003, Kwankwaso successfully contested again in 2011, regaining his position after an eight-year hiatus. “This victory reminds me of my experience in 2011 when I also staged a political comeback,” Kwankwaso said.

“Such a return requires immense commitment, dedication, hard work, resilience, and exceptional love and support from your people.”

In addition to his message of congratulations to Trump, Kwankwaso expressed his appreciation for the outgoing Biden administration. He commended President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for upholding a peaceful, fair, and transparent electoral process.

Kwankwaso lauded the integrity of U.S. democratic institutions, encouraging Nigeria and other nations to look to these practices as models for electoral fairness and respect for citizens’ voices.

“As we celebrate with the American people for enjoying a robust democracy and strong democratic institutions, I appeal to the U.S. government to support efforts to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions in Nigeria,” Kwankwaso emphasized.

He called for continued international support in Nigeria’s journey to ensure that democratic processes reflect the true will of the people.
