The Kano State Government has reverted the name of Yusuf Maitama Sule University to its original designation, Northwest University. The decision was finalized during the 21st meeting of the Kano State Council on November 29, 2024.
The institution, established as Northwest University, was renamed in 2017 by the Ganduje administration to honor the late diplomat and political icon Yusuf Maitama Sule, who died on July 3, 2017.
In a statement by Sanusi A. Kofar Naisa, the Public Relations Officer of the State Ministry for Higher Education, the government also announced plans to establish a Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education and Advanced Studies in the Ghari Local Government Area.

The statement noted that the proposed college would follow the model of existing institutions like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Education and Mallam Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies, which aims to enhance teacher training and advanced studies within the state.
To implement these changes, the government has directed the forwarding of relevant bills to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative approval.
Additionally, the Executive Council approved an increase in the retirement age for academic staff. Professors in universities will now retire at 70 instead of 65, while academic staff in other higher institutions will retire at 65 instead of 60.
These measures are part of broader efforts to improve the state’s education sector.
