Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday joined protesters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, accompanied by his son, a medical doctor, whom he said he brought along in case the demonstration turned violent.
Amaechi explained that his decision to attend the protest with his son was deliberate, noting that leaders should be ready to stand at the forefront of civic actions alongside their families, especially where there is a risk of injury.
He said his son’s presence was to provide immediate medical attention should any protester be hurt, reflecting his expectation that demonstrations of such scale could face security pushback.

The protest centres on calls for the compulsory inclusion of real-time electronic transmission of election results in the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Demonstrators insist that the Independent National Electoral Commission must be legally mandated to transmit results electronically from polling units, arguing that making the provision optional could undermine electoral transparency and credibility.
