The Kano State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into the tragic deaths of two students of Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, who were reportedly fatally assaulted by fellow students within the school premises.

Grassroots Parrot gathered that the victims, identified as Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, were allegedly attacked with dangerous improvised metal objects locally referred to as ‘Gwale-Gwale.’

The attack, believed to have been carried out by senior students, followed accusations that the deceased committed an undisclosed offense, prompting the assailants to “punish” them.

The disturbing development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday, July 16, 2025, by the Director of Public Enlightenment of the Kano State Ministry of Education, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru.

“The Kano State Government has promised to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth behind the tragic incident,” the statement read.

According to the release, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, has directed an immediate and transparent investigation into the matter. The directive was conveyed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Bashir Baffa Muhammad, who also paid a visit to the school.

Addressing the students during the visit, Muhammad cautioned against mob actions within the school environment. “You should avoid taking the law into your own hands but rather report any matter of concern to the school authority for appropriate action,” he advised.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, praying, “May Almighty Allah grant the souls of the deceased Jannatul Firdaus.”

Meanwhile, families of the victims have called for swift justice. Malam Ibrahim Yusuf Dungurawa, a relative of Umar Yusuf, described the family’s devastation and urged the government to ensure that those responsible are brought to book.

Similarly, Malam Idris Garba Tofawa, father of the late Hamza Idris, described the loss as a divine trial but appealed to authorities not to let the incident go unpunished.

The school has come under public scrutiny over safety concerns, with many demanding reforms to prevent such acts of violence among students.

As of press time, no arrests have been officially confirmed, but the government says all perpetrators will face the full weight of the law following the outcome of the investigation.
