  • Kano Government Calls  For Calm Amid Tension Over Armed Security Deployment to Emir’s Palace

The Kano State Government has called for calm and urged residents to remain peaceful following the deployment of armed security personnel to the Emir’s Palace at Kofar Kudu on Friday.

Abdullahi Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), made the appeal during a broadcast on Freedom Radio, Kano. Speaking in Hausa, he expressed shock at the deployment, describing it as unwarranted and provocative.

“We were surprised when we woke up this morning to hear that armed policemen had surrounded the Kano Emir’s palace without any breach of peace or reason to warrant such action,” Bichi said.

The SSG accused those responsible for the deployment of trying to create unrest in the state, alleging that the directive came from federal authorities.

“Who will give such directives from above? We know it is only the Federal Government that can give the directive to the police. We suspect there are some people conniving with Abuja to cause a crisis in Kano, which will not be acceptable to the Kano State Government,” he added.

The unexpected security operation heightened tensions in the city, particularly as it coincided with plans by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to accompany the newly appointed Wamban Kano, Alhaji Munir Sanusi, to his district in Bichi.

Eyewitnesses reported that the armed operatives restricted movement in and out of the palace, leaving many traditional rulers and titleholders stranded.

Reports indicate that similar security measures were enforced at the Bichi Emir’s palace, further fueling public concern.

Bichi dismissed rumors suggesting that the people of Bichi might oppose Emir Sanusi’s visit, emphasizing that Bichi residents are peace-loving and have no intention of disrupting the region’s stability.

“The newly appointed District Head is from Bichi, and his late father, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi I, was also a District Head of Bichi. We shall wait for the Emir to fix another date when we will mobilize people to accompany him to Bichi with the new District Head,” Bichi concluded.

The government’s reassurances aim to allay fears of potential unrest and maintain peace in the state as the situation unfolds.
