The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian tertiary institutions has announced a one-month suspension of its ongoing strike, effective November 5.
JAC, which includes the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), reached this decision following discussions with the Federal Government.
In a statement jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, JAC explained that the decision followed “exhaustive deliberations” with federal officials, resulting in a commitment to pay two out of the four months of owed salaries.
The first of these payments was made in October 2024, with the second month’s payment expected by the end of November.

“Arising from the above and in view of the level of commitment exhibited by the new Minister of Education and the leadership of the Department of State Services, the leadership of JAC, after several contacts and other patriotic considerations, hereby directs that the ongoing strike be suspended for one month, effective Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024,” the statement read.
JAC called on branch leaders of NASU and SSANU to organize joint congresses on their campuses to inform members of the development.
Discussions on additional demands, including N50 billion in earned allowances, arrears of 25/35 percent, and a wage award, are still ongoing.
The unions initially launched an indefinite strike on October 28 over the non-payment of four months’ salaries and other unmet demands.
The suspension is seen as a gesture of goodwill in response to the government’s commitments, while further negotiations continue.
