President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu and relevant agencies to expedite efforts to restore electricity to northern states affected by a prolonged blackout.

The President’s mandate followed an emergency meeting with Minister Adelabu and National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as the power outage—now entering its second week—continues to impact daily life and economic activity across 17 of 19 northern states.

A statement issued in Abuja by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Tinubu expressed deep concern over the extensive impact of the outage.

Reports indicate the blackout was caused by vandalization of the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines, which are critical to power supply in the region.

During the briefing with Adelabu on the repair status of the Shiroro-Kaduna lines, Tinubu underscored the urgency of restoring power and emphasized the importance of establishing a lasting solution to protect against future disruptions.

He urged engineers at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to accelerate repair efforts, assuring affected communities that relief was on the way.

In a bid to prevent further sabotage, President Tinubu instructed NSA Ribadu to coordinate with the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force to provide security for TCN personnel and contractors working on repairs, including aerial surveillance of the sites.

Tinubu further called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and prominent northern figures to support security agencies in safeguarding power infrastructure, warning that his administration would take a firm stand against any acts of sabotage on national assets.
