The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Kano State Government, threatening to embark on industrial action if its members’ demands are not addressed.
The notice, which commenced on October 2, 2024, is a response to the state government’s failure to resolve several long-standing issues affecting nurses and midwives.
The association’s acting State Secretary and Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Sharada, announced the ultimatum in a letter addressed to the Kano State Head of Civil Service. The notice warned that nurses across clinical facilities and training institutions would withdraw their services if their demands were not met by October 16, 2024.

Among the key issues highlighted by NANNM are the payment of a revised hazard allowance, harmonisation of the Scheme of Service for nurses, and the implementation of a 259% salary increase under the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS). The association emphasized that the government’s delay in meeting these demands has caused significant dissatisfaction among its members.
“The notice commences from Wednesday, 2nd October, to 16th October 2024,” the letter stated. “Should the government fail to respond positively within this period, we will have no choice but to commence industrial action to press for our rights.”
This development comes amid an indefinite strike by medical doctors in Kano under the National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP). The doctors, led by the association’s secretary, Dr. Anas Hassan, began their strike on October 1, 2024, citing the government’s failure to honor previous commitments as the primary reason.

The concurrent demands from both nurses and doctors have placed significant pressure on the Kano State Government, raising concerns about the potential disruption of healthcare services across the state if a resolution is not reached soon.
So far, the Kano State Government has not released an official response to the ultimatum issued by the nurses and midwives.
