Following recent floods in Borno State and rising concerns about dam safety nationwide, the Kano State Government has carried out a critical inspection of the popular Tiga Dam to ensure its structural integrity and prevent potential flooding disasters.

The inspection team, led by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Ali Makoda, and the Commissioner for Works, conducted the assessment alongside technical experts from both ministries. During the visit, Makoda emphasized the importance of the inspection, noting, “We came with some experts from the Ministry of Water Resources and also Works and Housing to assess the situation.

While the Tiga Dam is managed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, our role today was to inspect and ensure everything is in good condition.”

Makoda also referenced the recent flood disaster at Alo Dam, which raised alarm across the country about dam safety. “What happened at the Alo Dam sent a very negative signal to Nigerians. That is why His Excellency directed us to be here today,” he explained, highlighting the urgency of the inspection.

Reassuring the public, Makoda stated that experts had thoroughly reviewed the dam’s condition and found no signs of instability. “We have listened to the experts, and all indications show that the dam is intact. There is nothing to worry about,” he confirmed.

This inspection forms part of Kano State’s proactive strategy to mitigate flooding risks as the rainy season continues. The state government plans to extend assessments to other critical dams, including Bagwai and Challawa, to ensure the safety of residents and infrastructure across the state.
