Kano Govt Clarifies Curfew Relaxation Amid Growing Rumours

The Kano State Government has clarified its earlier relaxation of the 24-hour curfew it declared on Thursday following the nationwide hunger protest, which eventually turned violent in the state.

The state government maintained that the relaxation hours remain between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily, as earlier announced on Saturday night.

The curfew was initially relaxed for a few hours from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday to enable Muslim faithful to observe the Jumat prayers.

The clarification was necessitated by growing rumours among the state residents that the Saturday’s announcement was also only meant for Sunday, August 4, 2024, to enable the Christian faithful to attend their respective church services.

This development prompted Grassroots Parrot to approach the state commissioner for information, Halilu Dantiye, who made the announcement on behalf of the state government on Saturday.

In a telephone interview, Dantiye reiterated the earlier stance of the government that the relaxation hours of the curfew remain between 8.am and 2.pm daily until further notice.

“Yes, the relaxation is not only for today (Sunday). People will be allowed to go about their daily businesses between 8.am and 2.pm daily until the security operatives review the situation and give further direction.” He said.

The curfew was declared following the deadly violence and looting experienced by the state residents on Thursday as hoodlums hijacked the ongoing nationwide hunger protest in Kano State.

Many innocent residents have lost their lives and properties worth millions of naira to the violent protest in the state.
