Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has disclosed that no fewer than 110 associations have so far submitted formal requests to be registered as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yakubu made this revelation on Wednesday during INEC’s second quarterly consultative meeting with media executives held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
He noted that the growing number of groups seeking registration indicates a renewed interest in political participation and competition in the country’s democratic process.

“So far, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties,” Yakubu stated.
While acknowledging the enthusiasm of various groups to contribute to Nigeria’s democratic space, the INEC Chairman emphasized that all applications will be subjected to strict scrutiny and must meet the constitutional and legal requirements set out in the Electoral Act before registration can be granted.
