MALARIA

By Adebayo Oladejo

As the world commemorates World Malaria Day 2024, with the theme, “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world”, a Pharmaceutical scientist, Pharm. Remi Omotosho has called for accelerated efforts to eradicate the scourge.

Pharm. Omotosho, Managing Director of a leading pharmaceutical company in Nigeria, Bond Chemical Industries Limited, made the call on Thursday, a day recognised by the United Nations (UN), to raise awareness about malaria.

Omotosho, speaking on the theme for this year’s celebration, stressed the commitment of the firm to eradicate malaria by providing accessible and effective solutions to communities worldwide, particularly in Nigeria by standing at the forefront of the battle against the deadly disease.

Quoting the message from (WHO), he said, “In achieving the vision of a malaria-free world, everyone has the right to quality, timely, and affordable services to prevent, detect, and treat malaria, yet this is not a reality for all.”

The Pharmaceutical scientist, in a statement, further noted that infants and young children continue to suffer the greatest mortality; with an estimated 4 out of 5 malaria-related deaths in the African Region in 2022, among under 5 children.

Omotosho added that malaria has continued to be a significant global health challenge, affecting millions of lives each year in Nigeria and across African regions, as well as other regions where access to effective prevention and treatment is limited.

According to him, the company’s quest to eradicate malaria in Nigeria has engendered the manufacturing of Temexcin Plus, a brand of dihydroartemisinin and piperaquine phosphate, an innovative antimalarial product.

He said “Temexcin Plus is a clinically proven, safe and efficacious drug. Developed through years of rigorous research and clinical trials, the drug offers a potent yet safe defence against malaria, targeting the parasite with unparalleled precision while minimising the risk of side effects and relapse commonly associated with traditional antimalarial medications.”

He also noted that the antimalarial has demonstrated high efficacy in combating multiple strains of the malaria parasite, offering reliable protection and treatment.

“Meanwhile, at Bond, we are dedicated to ensuring widespread access to Temexcin Plus, particularly in underserved communities where malaria poses the greatest threat.

“Through strategic partnerships and distribution networks, our antimalarial is made available to every Nigerian across the country and affordable regardless of socioeconomic status, helping to turn the tide against malaria.” He said.

“In commemoration of the 2024 World Malaria Day, we at Bond Chemical Industries Limited are inviting stakeholders, healthcare professionals, and communities worldwide to join hands with us in our mission to eradicate malaria once and for all.

“Together, we can draw the line against malaria and create a healthier, malaria-free future for generations to come, and as we jointly fight this battle, Temexcin Plus is readily available as a potent dependable weapon to tame malaria”
