The Sharia-enforcing police in Kano State (Hisbah) have cancelled the controversial marriage between two TikTok personalities that had been ordered by a court after their viral kissing video sparked outrage in the conservative northern city.
The planned union between Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda was halted after Mai Wushirya told officials of the Kano Hisbah Board that he was no longer interested in marrying Yar Guda — despite earlier telling a court that they were in love.
The development was confirmed to by Abba Sufi, the Director-General of Hisbah, who said the groom admitted lying to the court to escape prosecution.

“Mai Wushirya told us that he lied to the court that he and Yar Guda were in love to evade prosecution,” Sufi said. “With this development, we have cancelled the wedding and referred the matter back to the judge for appropriate action.”
The drama began after videos showing the duo cuddling and kissing circulated widely on TikTok, drawing condemnation among Kano residents. The footage was deemed “indecent” by authorities in the predominantly Muslim state, where Sharia law operates alongside common law.
In response, a magistrate court ordered Hisbah to arrange their marriage within 60 days, describing it as a corrective measure under Islamic principles.

Preparations for the ceremony were already underway, with Mai Wushirya’s parents giving their consent and the Kano State Government reportedly agreeing to provide a house for the couple as part of the bride’s conditions.
However, the sudden withdrawal of consent by the groom brought the entire arrangement to a halt.
The Hisbah Board has now suspended all plans and returned the matter to the court for further legal direction.
