South East Governors on Tuesday hosted former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his solidarity visit, where the governors resolved to meet President Bola Tinubu to advocate for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Following a marathon meeting lasting over seven hours, the governors addressed the media.

They announced the formation of a burial committee for the late Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, led by former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim.

Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, conveyed the forum’s condolences to the families and communities affected by Onu’s passing.

“The Forum commiserates with the families of Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, and indeed the entire South East region and the entire  family of Ogbonnaya Onu on the demise of His Excellency Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu,” Uzodinma stated.

The forum received a delegation including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, who visited in solidarity.

The governors reviewed the report from the South East security and economic summit held in Owerri, Imo State, on September 28, 2023.

They agreed to implement the report’s recommendations on regional security and economic integration and affirmed their commitment to actionable plans on key issues.

“The Forum resolved to visit Mr. President to discuss all pressing issues concerning the Southeast region.

The Forum also deliberated and resolved to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Uzodinma added.

The Ogbonnaya Onu burial committee will include former Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, serving as the committee’s secretary, along with other prominent Igbo leaders from Southeast region states.
