Senator Ndume Appeals For Ifeanyi Ubah’s Widow To Succeed Him In Senate

Senator representing Borno South , Ali Ndume, has urged his colleagues in the Senate to support the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s widow as his successor in representing Anambra South Senatorial District.

Ndume made the appeal on Tuesday, November 19, during a valedictory session held in honor of Ubah, who passed away in July at the age of 52 after a brief illness in London.

Ubah, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), served as the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream.

Addressing the chamber, Ndume highlighted the precedent of relatives succeeding deceased senators, arguing that Ubah’s widow could carry forward his legacy and aspirations for the people of Anambra South.

“It happened before. Chuba Okadigbo was a great politician. When he died, years after, his wife, Margery, served in this chamber,” Ndume said.

He cited other examples, including First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who he noted had entered the Senate with the support of her husband, now President Bola Tinubu, and others like Senator Dafinone, whose father was a former senator.

Ndume also appealed for unity among senators to ensure that Ubah’s widow is given the opportunity to serve, emphasizing her capability and the importance of sustaining her late husband’s legacy.

“Finally, Mr. President, my appeal to you and distinguished colleagues, his wife, fortunately, is 50 years or so, a wonderful wife. Let us support the family to have a spirit representative of Ifeanyi here in the chamber,” he said.

The Senate has yet to take a formal position on Ndume’s appeal, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to conduct a by-election to fill the vacant seat.

Ubah’s passing left a significant void in the Senate, where he was known for his leadership in the petroleum downstream sector and his dedication to his constituents in Anambra South.
