Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the presentation of a bill to the State House of Assembly seeking to prohibit same-sex marriage and other practices the government has described as immoral.
The decision followed the 31st Executive Council meeting held at the Government House Annex, Kwankwasiyya City, according to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the state’s Islamic and cultural values, stressing that activities deemed contrary to Kano’s traditions would not be tolerated.

The proposed legislation specifically targets acts such as same-sex marriage, Madigo (lesbianism), and Luwadi (sodomy), with provisions for stringent punishment for those caught engaging in or promoting such practices.
“Our duty as a government is to protect the moral integrity of our society. Acts that conflict with our religion and tradition will never be condoned,” Yusuf said.
He further expressed optimism that the Kano State House of Assembly would give the bill urgent attention, describing it as critical to preserving the moral and social fabric of the state.
