The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State continues to experience a wave of defections, with Hon. Abbas Sani Abbas, a former Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abbas announced his defection on Friday during a visit to the Kano residence of Senator Barau I Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate.
The announcement was made public through a statement by Ismael Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy Senate President on Media and Publicity.
“In the past six months, hundreds of NNPP leaders from all 44 local government areas of Kano State, along with thousands of their supporters, have abandoned the party and the Kwankwasiyya movement,” the statement read.

The defections, labeled the “Barau Tsunami,” have seen disillusioned NNPP members discard their iconic red caps—symbolic of the Kwankwasiyya movement—and align themselves with the APC.
The defection of Abbas follows growing calls within the NNPP for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to take firmer control of governance in Kano.
This led to a political shake-up, including the dismissal of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, and five commissioners, including Abbas, last month.
During the meeting, Abbas pledged his loyalty to the APC and vowed to work toward the party’s success across Kano State and beyond.

Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, welcomed Abbas alongside Kano State APC Chairman Prince Abdullahi Abbas (Ɗan Sarki, Jikan Sarki) and other party leaders.
The Deputy President of the Senate reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to inclusivity, good governance, and service delivery, highlighting that the party remains open to all patriotic Nigerians.
“The APC is big enough to accommodate all lovers of the country,” Barau said, assuring Abbas of the party’s support.
