The Federal Government has declared all 256 custodial centers across the country “red zones” in anticipation of the nationwide protests against bad governance set to commence on August 1.

The announcement was made by the Controller General of Corrections (CGC), Hailey Nababa, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja. Nababa emphasized that the sanctity of these centers must not be violated under any circumstances.

“In view of the purported national protest scheduled to hold on the first day of August 2024, the Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the public that the custodial centers have been designated as red zones; therefore, any person or group of persons who have no business whatsoever should steer clear,” said Nababa in a statement signed on his behalf by Service Spokesman, ACC Abubakar Danlami Umar.

The statement highlighted the importance of custodial and non-custodial centers as essential national assets. “Tampering with or attacking them will lead to a breakdown of law and order and further exacerbate the security of society in general,” the statement read.

To ensure the protection of these facilities, adequate security measures have been put in place. The Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce (MOIJTF) has been activated to provide extra security in and around custodial centers nationwide.

CGC Nababa expressed his appreciation for the ongoing cooperation of the public in maintaining peace and order. He urged citizens to continue their support and report any suspicious activities. “The public is advised to report any suspicious plan or movement to our email: info@corrections.gov.ng or to our official website: www.corrections.gov.ng, or call 09060004598 or 08075050006 directly,” Nababa added.

As the nation braces for the upcoming protests, the Federal Government’s declaration serves as a stern warning to potential agitators, emphasizing the non-negotiable security of correctional facilities.
