President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, as the Chairman of the governing council of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto State.

This decision comes as part of a broader move by the Federal Government to appoint 555 appointments to serve as chairpersons and members of governing councils across various tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The appointment of Jega, a distinguished figure known for his pivotal role in Nigeria’s electoral processes, underscores the government’s commitment to bringing in experienced and reputable individuals to steer the affairs of higher education institutions.

Jega’s tenure at INEC was marked by significant electoral reforms and innovations, earning him widespread acclaim both nationally and internationally.

This development comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions within the academic community, particularly fueled by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which had threatened industrial action due to the government’s delay in reconstituting governing councils of public universities.

Grassroots Parrot had reported ASUU’s issuance of a two-week ultimatum, demanding prompt action from the federal government.

In addition to Jega, the newly appointed governing council of Usmanu Danfodiyo University includes notable members such as Miss Mary Nyieor Yisa, R.O. Kazeem, Professor Usman Musa, and Dr. Anthony Usoro, as identified by a reliable source.

“The Federal Government has appointed chairpersons and members to oversee the governing councils of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education,” highlighting the comprehensive nature of the appointments”. The source was revealed.

The upcoming inauguration and retreats for the newly constituted councils have been scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 30th, and Friday, May 31st, 2024, at the National Universities Commission (NUC) headquarters in Abuja.

These events are expected to serve as crucial platforms for outlining strategic directions and objectives for the respective institutions under their purview.

With the appointment of Professor Jega and other esteemed individuals, there are high hopes for enhanced governance, academic excellence, and institutional development across Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape.
