Emir Sanusi Urges Peace Amid Tensions Over Reinstatement

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on residents of the state to maintain peace and uphold the law amid rising tensions surrounding his reinstatement as the traditional ruler.

Speaking during a special Iftar gathering at his palace on Sunday, the Emir strongly criticized those opposing his return to the throne, warning that “fire would consume those inciting unrest in the city.”

Sanusi, who was restored as Emir in May 2024 following a court ruling, described his return as an act of divine will. He asserted that those challenging his authority were effectively defying God’s decision.

“This issue is beyond us; it is about God’s will, and He needs no one’s assistance,” Sanusi declared in Hausa, as captured in a viral video circulating on social media.

The Emir further urged Kano residents to remain patient and prayerful, assuring them that divine justice would ultimately prevail.

“Let us be patient and continue praying, for God will always support those on the right path. May fire consume anyone seeking to cause trouble in Kano. May Allah protect us and our community from all evil. Let us remain peaceful and steadfast in prayer. Whoever challenges God’s judgment will never succeed.”

His remarks come at a time of heightened political and social tension in Kano, as the state prepares for the annual Sallah Durbar celebrations. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has instructed all four emirates in Kano to begin preparations for the grand event, ensuring that both citizens and visitors can enjoy the festivities.

However, in a new twist to the ongoing leadership dispute, the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has formally notified security agencies of his intention to hold a durbar to commemorate his fifth year as the city’s monarch.

Bayero was removed from office in May 2024 after a high court upheld Sanusi’s reinstatement, but his supporters continue to challenge the decision, keeping the leadership tussle alive.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on Kano to see how the state government and security agencies will manage the potential conflict during the upcoming celebrations.
