Kano State Government has sacked three staff of Kabo General Hospital and suspended the accountant, auditor and head of the laboratory of the facility over alleged extortion of patients.

The Executive Secretary Kano State Hospital Management Board, Dr Mansur Nagoda approved the sacking and suspension “with immediate effect” shortly after he conducted an unscheduled visit to the facility.

Grassroots Parrot gathered that the sacked staff members were accused of charging patients N12, 000 for X-rays test as against the approved hospital price of 2,000 and no documents to show as evidence of payment.

A statement issued by the Board’s spokesperson, Samira Suleiman on Sunday, said the development left the facility with carrying out less than ten X-rays per week despite the fact that the two X-ray batteries are functional.

According to the statement, the accountant, auditor and head of the laboratory of the facility were also suspended for selling free HIV test kits given to facilities by the state government.

The affected officials had been asked to report to the board headquarters for further disciplinary actions, according to the statement.

Flanked by the Director General of Kano Centre for Disease Control Dr. Muhammad Abbas and the DG of the State Agency for the Control of Aids, Dr. Usman Bashir during the visit, the statement quoted Dr Nagode as expressing dissatisfaction with what they met on the ground and referred to it as an act of sabotage.

The statement read in parts ‘’Furthermore, Dr Nagoda explained that the  Labour ward was not in good condition, had no bed sheets on the beds, absence of compound officer, dumped equipment which was donated 4 years ago, as well as dumped COVID-19 items donated to the facility.

‘’He vowed that no one would be spared if caught. This decision we took should serve as a deterrent to others. We took an oath so we will stick to that oath and sanitise the health system.”

‘’Dr Nagoda added that it is sad that after the state government made sure that each and every health staff is on the CONHESS salary scale, they are still exploiting innocent patients.
