The Kano State House of Assembly has approved a bill paving the way for the establishment of a state police force, marking a significant step towards decentralising policing in the state.
The House Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, disclosed that the approval followed the adoption of amendments made by the House of Representatives to facilitate the establishment of state police across Nigeria.
The development signals Kano State’s move to align with ongoing efforts to introduce state-controlled policing as part of broader security reforms aimed at addressing the country’s security challenges.
However, the establishment of the proposed police force will depend on the completion of the necessary legislative and constitutional processes.

In a related development, the assembly has approved a proposal by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to reduce the state’s 2026 budget in response to changes in its revenue projections.
The state’s original budget, which stood at ₦1.477 trillion, has been reduced to ₦1.222 trillion, representing a cut of ₦255 billion.
According to the assembly, the downward review became necessary following a decline in federal allocations attributed to changes in the tax laws.
The revised budget is intended to align the state’s expenditure plans with its current revenue outlook and ensure that government spending reflects the funds expected to be available.
