In a heart-stirring act of humanity, a farmer in Kebbi State, Kabiru Kamba, has recounted how he exhumed and rescued a newborn baby girl who had been buried alive on his farmland in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.

Narrating the incident on Monday to the Kebbi State Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence, led by Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani, a former Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Kamba explained that he had noticed an unusual ridge among the regular ones on his farmland.

“Out of curiosity, I flagged down some motorcyclists to help dig,” he said. “While digging, we found a wrapper buried in the soil, which raised my suspicion. I immediately informed the police at a nearby checkpoint, who came and dug further, only to discover a baby girl, miraculously alive and crying, shrouded in a piece of textile.”

Kamba said he took custody of the baby out of compassion and a sense of humanity. “I didn’t expect anything in return; it’s simply a humanitarian act. Coincidentally, my wife had just given birth, so breastfeeding the baby has not been a challenge,” he explained.

He also revealed plans to hold a naming ceremony for the rescued child on Wednesday. “By Allah’s will, she will be named then. I’ve already bought a ram and all other essentials for the event,” he added with pride.

His wife, in a show of support and empathy, expressed joy in welcoming the baby into their family. “I felt perfectly fine and happy when my husband told me. I will take care of her just the way I will do for my own,” she said.

The TWG team, visibly moved by the story, praised the farmer’s heroism and expressed gratitude for the miraculous survival of the baby. Alhaji Nasiru Idris, Secretary of the TWG, said their visit aimed to show concern over the tragic incident and offer moral support.

“We also commend the swift action of the Nigeria Police and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring justice and continued support for the child,” he stated.

The team donated various relief items, including baby clothes, powdered milk, soap, diapers, a baby bed, a mosquito net, a mattress, and detergents.

Hajiya Hammani assured the farmer that the matter would be brought to the attention of the Kebbi State First Lady, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris, for further intervention.

Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrator of the heinous act.
