In a renewed effort to sanitise the education sector, the Kano State Government has called on all unregistered private and voluntary schools to formalise their operations and comply with minimum educational standards.

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board, Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, made the appeal on Wednesday, June 25, during an unscheduled inspection tour to ten selected private and voluntary schools within Kano metropolis.

The inspection team, which included members of the board and journalists, assessed various schools to evaluate compliance with registration requirements, infrastructure adequacy, and teacher qualification.

Speaking after the exercise, Umar explained that the inspection was in line with the directive of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, following his administration’s declaration of a state of emergency for education in the state.

“This exercise is not about harassment or tax collection. It’s about ensuring that every child in Kano, whether in public or private schools, receives quality education,” he said.

He stressed that schools must be properly registered, maintain suitable learning environments, and employ qualified teachers. Umar noted that the data gathered from the inspections would aid in educational planning and policy formulation.

The board also urged parents to support the initiative by monitoring their children’s academic progress and paying school fees promptly.

“Parents should make time to visit their children’s schools and ensure they attend classes regularly,” Umar advised.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to revamping the education sector, Umar lauded the state’s 2025 budget allocation, revealing that over 31 percent of the total budget was dedicated to education—a figure that surpasses international recommendations.

“The present administration under Engineer Abba Kabir has demonstrated its readiness to invest in education by allocating nearly 31 percent of the 2025 budget to the sector. This exceeds the global benchmark set by UNICEF and other international education bodies,” he added.
