Kano Govt Raises Alarm Over Poisonous Air Pollution

KANO GOV 2

The Kano State Government has issued a strong warning to residents regarding dangerously polluted air in several neighborhoods of the state capital, following the release of its weekly environmental report by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

According to the report, which covered an air quality assessment conducted between May 26 and May 30, high levels of pollution were recorded in key areas including Gaida, Ja’en, Sabon Titi, and Sharada Market—locations spread across Kano Municipal and Kumbotso Local Government Area.

The report classified the air in these locations as “unsafe,” warning that exposure could pose serious health risks to residents. It highlighted growing concerns over the spread of respiratory illnesses and other pollution-related diseases.

“The further loss of air quality may contribute to the spread of respiratory illnesses and other diseases associated with pollution,” the Ministry warned in the report.

In response, the government says it is preparing to implement environmental response measures specifically targeting the affected areas. These include heightened monitoring, public health advisories, and possibly stricter environmental regulations.

The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, who released the report via his official Facebook page, stressed the collective responsibility of preserving the environment.

“It is the duty of us all to take care of the environment. Environmental stewardship is the responsibility of both the government and the public,” Dr. Hashim stated.

He also expressed concern over the broader pattern of environmental degradation across the state and confirmed that the government is considering further steps to address the escalating environmental challenges.

The Ministry urged residents in the affected areas to take precautionary measures, such as wearing face masks, reducing outdoor activities, and reporting symptoms of respiratory distress to health authorities.
