In a move to protect its environmental initiatives, the Kano State Government has begun arresting stray goats that are destroying newly planted tree seedlings under its Urban Renewal Project.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, confirmed the development in a statement released on Friday.
According to him, several goats have already been impounded and are currently being held at Zone I of the Nigeria Police Command in Kano.
“As part of our ongoing Urban Renewal Project, we’ve begun planting trees along major roads, starting with Lodge Road and Race Course,” Dr. Hashim said. “This initiative is aimed at reducing heat and air pollution while also enhancing the beauty of Kano city.”

However, the project is facing a unique challenge of free-roaming goats feeding on the young trees.
Dr. Hashim expressed frustration over reports that residents are allowing their animals to wander and graze unchecked, damaging the seedlings the state has worked hard to plant.
“We’ve received complaints that some residents are allowing their goats to roam freely, and these animals are damaging the young trees we’ve just planted,” he stated.
“I want to make it clear: this will not be tolerated. We have already impounded several goats found eating the new trees.”

The ministry noted that environmental enforcement teams are now actively monitoring compliance across the city, warning that more goats could be seized if the trend continues.
Dr. Hashim appealed to the public to support the government’s green initiative by restraining their animals and taking collective responsibility for the urban environment.
“We’re calling on the public to work with us to protect these efforts. Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Kano,” he added.
