A yet-to-be-identified woman reportedly committed suicide by jumping off the Third Mainland Bridge into the waters near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront on Thursday evening, March 13, 2025.
Despite prompt rescue efforts by marine police officers stationed in the area, the woman was confirmed dead upon arrival at the University of Lagos medical center.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who stated that the marine police responded swiftly to the emergency but were unable to save her life.

“Today, March 13, 2025, at about 1600 hours, an unidentified woman reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water near the UNILAG waterfront at approximately 1500 hours. She was recovered at the University of Lagos shore slipway by a team of marine police officers stationed in the area. Despite their efforts, she was confirmed dead by a team of UNILAG medical doctors in the presence of officers from the Sabo Police Division,” Hundeyin said.
He further stated that the deceased’s body has since been evacuated to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba for preservation.
The tragic incident has sparked discussions on mental health awareness and suicide prevention in Lagos, with residents calling for increased efforts to provide support for individuals battling depression and emotional distress.

Authorities have urged members of the public with any information that could help identify the deceased to come forward.
The police have also reiterated their commitment to ensuring that such incidents are minimized through enhanced surveillance and support mechanisms for distressed individuals.
