The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Isiaku Kubarachi has said that the recent flood has resulted in the loss of 31 lives in 21 local government areas in the state.

Kubarachi said 280 people were affected and 5,280 houses were destroyed by the flood which also touched 2,518 farmlands, covering 976 hectares of land.

The Executive Secretary explained that the heavy rainfall, which caused the flood, was particularly severe and resulted in 135 people sustaining injuries as some houses collapsed on them.

The affected local government councils include Wudil, Gwale, Nassarawa, Dala, Tarauni, Dawakin-Tofa, and Dambatta, among others.

He emphasized that the state government, under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, took proactive measures before the rainy season to safeguard lives and properties.

This included clearing blockages in drains and evacuating refuse to ensure smooth water flow during the rain.

According to him, SEMA and NEMA have assessed the damage in the affected areas and forwarded the necessary data for assistance to the state governor.

“The state is working on providing aid to all 21 local government areas affected by the flood and hopes for a positive outcome soon.” He said.

Kubarachi also noted that NEMA had promised to provide assistance after assessing the affected communities.

However, he clarified that affected individuals are currently residing with their neighbors, and there are no internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in Kano State.

While some affected individuals expressed disappointment with the government’s response, they made a passionate appeal for swift assistance from the state and federal government to alleviate their plight.

They emphasized the need for quick and effective support, considering the losses they have incurred due to the flood.
