The Kano State government has maintained that the relaxation of the curfew it earlier declared during the #EndBadGovernance protest persists despite the end of the nationwide hunger protests on Saturday.

It insisted that the curfew it declared from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. is still in order, despite a series of reports on social media that the curfew has been lifted.

Business and other daily activities in Kano have resumed after the hunger protests ended on Saturday, and the organizers did not announce any extension of the protest.

The recent normalcy witnessed in the pyramid city after the violent and deadly protests gave many residents the impression that the curfew had been lifted.

For instance, one Comr. Aliyu Izala Plus also shared a post on his X account @IzalaPlus_comr indicating that “in light of the improved security situation, the Kano state government has relaxed the curfew effective today, Friday, August 9, 2024.

“Residents are now permitted to move freely for their lawful activities from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until further notice.”.

But the state government on Monday denied the rumours, saying that the status quo would be maintained until further notice.

Responding to a text message by Grassroots Parrots, the state commissioner for information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, asked the general public to disregard the rumors.

Asked if the curfew has either been relaxed or lifted, Dantiye said, “No, it has not been relaxed. It’s from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.”

The curfew was declared following the deadly violence and looting experienced by the state residents on August 1, 2024 when the protest began as hoodlums hijacked the demonstrations in Kano State.

Many innocent residents lost their lives and properties worth millions of naira to the violent protest in the state.
