The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will support only candidates who align with President Bola Tinubu’s vision in the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections slated for February 21 — regardless of their political affiliation.
Wike made the remarks on Saturday night in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, an event marking six decades of scholarship, leadership and public service.
According to the minister, he owes no one an apology for backing President Tinubu and will actively work to ensure that only candidates loyal to the President emerge victorious in the council polls.
“With the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, I have a responsibility to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win,” Wike said. “It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who does not support Tinubu does not win. I owe no apology for my position.”

Speaking on the celebrant, Wike described Onor as a dependable ally and trusted friend, pledging continued solidarity with him.
In a citation, Prof. Anthony Eyang highlighted Onor’s background, noting that the Cross River-born academic-turned-politician has built a career rooted in discipline, scholarship and public service — from his days at the University of Calabar to his tenure in the Senate and involvement in state politics.
Chairman of the planning committee, Senator Philip Aduda, said the event was organised to thank God for Onor’s life and contributions as both an academic and political figure.
Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who represented former Abia State Governor and Ambassador-designate, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, described Onor as a prepared and capable leader. Former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Kalu Agabi (SAN), also commended the senator’s courage and intellect.
A Festschrift in honour of Onor was presented by Prof. Dave Imbua of the University of Calabar, celebrating his academic contributions. The book was unveiled on behalf of Wike and associates, alongside a reported N50 million donation.
In his response, Onor reflected on his journey at 60, emphasising the importance of character, excellence and faith, while thanking family, friends and supporters for their unwavering encouragement.
