Wedding Parties Banned In Taraba State

The Muslim Council of Taraba State has announced a sweeping ban on all forms of wedding parties within the state capital, Jalingo.

The decision, reached after consultations with Islamic clerics, traditional rulers, and local authorities, was the focus of sermons delivered across Jummat mosques in the city last Friday.

The council specifically outlawed popular gatherings such as “Kauyawa” and “Ajo” parties, which it described as unruly events marked by “large crowds of youths, often dressed in tattered clothing, who dance late into the night.”

Imam Tajudeen Nuhu, the Chief Imam of Mayo Gwoi Jummat Mosque, announced the directive on behalf of the council.

“Henceforth, it is forbidden for any household to hold ‘Kauyawa,’ parties, ‘Ajo,’ or any form of celebration during weddings here in Jalingo,” Nuhu declared.

The council warned that households who defy the order will face strict sanctions. No imam will conduct their Nikah (marriage contract), and further penalties include denial of funeral prayers, naming ceremonies, and wedding lectures in such homes.

Clerics themselves were also cautioned against attending any of the banned events. According to the directive, those who defy the order risk losing their positions.

The Muslim Council stated that the ban is aimed at restoring discipline, morality, and adherence to Islamic values in the community.
