The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has warned that the ongoing renegotiation between university unions and the Federal Government is yet to be concluded.
The union cautioned against any claims that an agreement has been reached. It also threatened to embark on industrial action if discussions are not finalised by the end of April.
This position was outlined in a communiqué issued after a special NEC meeting held on Saturday at the union’s national secretariat in Abuja, where members reviewed progress in the talks.
In the communiqué, signed by SSANU National President Muhammad Ibrahim and released to the media on Sunday, the council stressed that negotiations with the Federal Government are still ongoing and no binding agreement has been signed.
NEC also raised concerns about misleading information in the public domain suggesting that the process had been concluded, including reports of a proposed 30 per cent allowance increase.
The union insisted that discussions are still in progress and no final deal has been reached.
SSANU maintained that it would reject any outcome that does not reflect the understanding reached during negotiations, emphasizing the need for fairness, due process, and respect for collective bargaining.
Reaffirming its earlier stance alongside the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) under their Joint Action Committee, the council upheld the April 1–30, 2026 ultimatum given to the Federal Government to conclude negotiations and sign an agreement.

It warned that failure to meet the deadline would leave the unions with no option but to embark on an indefinite and comprehensive industrial action.
The council, however, urged members nationwide to remain calm, vigilant, and united, while staying prepared to comply with any directives from the union leadership in defence of their welfare and rights.
SSANU reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of its members, stating that it will continue to pursue justice with unity and determination.
This latest warning follows an earlier communiqué issued after the union’s 54th NEC meeting at Ekiti State University, where SSANU expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of negotiations and highlighted concerns over salary delays, poor university funding, and worsening working conditions.
