President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday joined fellow Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in an extraordinary virtual summit convened to address the escalating political crisis in Guinea-Bissau following Wednesday’s coup.
The emergency meeting, held via Zoom, brought together West African leaders in a swift diplomatic effort to respond to the unfolding situation in the country.
The Guinea-Bissau military had on Wednesday seized power after arresting President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, announcing General Horta Nta Na Man as the head of a one-year transitional government.
The development has triggered regional concerns amid a wave of recent coups destabilising parts of West Africa.

A photograph released by the State House Media Department showed President Tinubu participating in the high-level virtual session from Abuja.
Tinubu previously served as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for two consecutive terms until June 2025, when he handed over leadership to Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio.
As ECOWAS continues to battle a resurgence of military takeovers across the region, Thursday’s emergency meeting underscored the bloc’s renewed commitment to safeguarding democracy and preventing further instability in West Africa.
