An uncompleted three-storey building collapsed on Sunday evening in the Abedi area of Sabon Gari, Kano, trapping several individuals beneath the rubble.
Grassroots Parrot gathered that many of the victims had taken shelter in the structure to escape a heavy downpour before the incident occurred around 5 pm.
As of the time of filing this report on Sunday night, 11 people have been rescued and taken to Murtala Muhammad Hospital for treatment.
Unconfirmed sources report at least two fatalities, while distress calls from trapped victims could still be heard beneath the debris.
Eyewitnesses at the scene allege that the building had exhibited signs of structural weakness from early stages of construction, with visible bending during the first and second decking.
Despite the presence of emergency personnel, including the State Emergency Management Agency SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Isyaku Abdullahi Kubarachi, there was growing concern as of 9 p.m. over delays in deploying excavators to aid the rescue effort.
Kubarachi declined to speak to our Correspondent, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing operations.
