The member representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has disclosed that traditional rulers will be assigned specific roles in the ongoing reform of the 1999 Constitution.

Doguwa made this known on Tuesday, August 26, while speaking at the 2025 International Hausa Day celebration held in Daura, Katsina State.

According to him, a request to that effect has already been submitted to the constitutional reform committee.

“Considering the crucial role of traditional rulers in the country, as member of the House of Representatives we are already considering that provision,” Doguwa said.

“Traditional rulers even before colonial rulers have been very crucial in ensuring peace, security and local administration. So, we need to provide them with their right position in the constitution.”

Doguwa, who also holds the traditional title of Sardaunan Kasar Hausa Mai Tuta, commended the organisers of the event, describing it as an avenue to strengthen unity among Hausa speakers globally.

The 2025 International Hausa Day celebration, hosted at the palace of the Emir of Daura, brought together scholars, cultural groups, and enthusiasts from within and outside Nigeria.

First marked on social media in 2015, the event has grown into a global annual festival held every August 26, though it is yet to be officially recognised by the United Nations.

Daura, the host city, was selected for this year’s celebration because of its historical significance as the cradle of the Hausa people and language, as well as the mother of the modern Hausa states.
