President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honour of his late predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
The development was disclosed on Thursday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga in a brief statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as MUHAMMADU Buhari University. President Tinubu announced the honour at the session of tributes of the Federal Executive Council to his late predecessor,” Onanuga wrote.

The decision was made during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held in Abuja, dedicated to paying tribute to the late former president, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital at the age of 82.
The renaming of the institution is part of a broader set of initiatives aimed at immortalizing Buhari’s legacy, particularly in the North-East region, where he enjoyed significant political support throughout his lifetime.
Founded in 1975, the University of Maiduguri is one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions in the northeast, playing a critical role in education and development in the region, especially during years of insurgency and insecurity.
