The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced plans to shut down universities across the nation and will hold nationwide protests on Tuesday to press home their demands for salary arrears.
SSANU, alongside the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), has been in ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government regarding four months of unpaid salaries.
Despite a warning strike and a two-week ultimatum given to the government, their demands remain unmet.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim, speaking on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” program on Friday, accused the Federal Government of making empty promises.
“As responsible leaders, we have decided to direct our branches to hold protests nationwide on July 9 to highlight the issues we face,” Ibrahim said.He also announced a grand protest in Abuja on July 18, targeting the offices of the Minister of Education and the Minister of Labour.

Ibrahim warned that if their demands were not met after the protests, SSANU would escalate their actions. “We will protest at the branches, then in Abuja, and if necessary, proceed to a total, comprehensive, indefinite strike without any concession,” he stated.
The impending protests and potential strike underscore the unions’ frustration and determination to resolve the salary arrears issue, which threatens to disrupt academic activities across the country.
