Social Media Poses Security Threat in Nigeria- Nuhu Ribadu

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has stated that there is a critical need to address the negative impacts of social media as both local and global security threats.

He said this during a meeting with defence, security, and response agencies spokespersons, Ribadu, underscored the critical need to tackle the negative impacts of social media as security threat.

Expressing concerns over the proliferation of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, Ribadu emphasized their detrimental effects on national security and public engagement.

He urged spokespersons to collaborate effectively to counter media manipulation by terrorist groups and criminal elements, stressing the importance of strategic communication in national security.

Ribadu however, called for a comprehensive plan of action to engage Nigerians, build trust, and effectively counter violent extremism.

He advocated for the integration of strategic communication into all operational aspects, including information operations and public relations, to project the country’s national power and values.

Ribadu further stated, “The adept use of social media platforms by those who seek power to shape public opinion against citizens is a global and local threat, presenting an immediate national security priority. The urgency to prepare and be proactive in our national security strategic communication management is now, and the spokespersons have a critical role to play.”

He emphasized the importance of adopting strategies that honor the personal sacrifices of service personnel, stating, “Upon the sweat and blood of service personnel and the men and women who protect us daily, we must build a narrative of resilience and mobilize our people.”

Ribadu urged spokespersons to play a crucial role in effective governance communication to project results and reach audiences both domestically and internationally. He highlighted the necessity of being ahead of the news and proactively updating the public to counter fake news effectively.
