The Sharia Court sitting at the Hisbah headquarters in Kano has ordered the remand of the village head of Tamburawa, Dawakin Kudu Local Government, Alhaji Auwal Umar Dantube, over allegations of defamation and unlawful takeover of property.

The case was presided over by Judge Malam Sani Tanimu Sani Hausawa after a petition was lodged at Zone One Police Headquarters by the family of the late Alhaji Mammada Tamburawa.

The petitioners accused the traditional ruler and his aide, Sulaiman Dogo Matage, of defamation, public disturbance, and wrongful seizure of property belonging to orphans.

The court had earlier issued a warrant for the arrest of the village head after he failed to honour its invitation. However, before police enforcement, his lawyer, Barrister Tijjani Kabir Dukawa, produced him before the court.

When the charges were read, Alhaji Dantube pleaded not guilty. His counsel sought bail, which was granted under strict conditions.

The judge directed that two sureties must stand for the defendant: one being a close family member or his wife, and the other a ward head or another village head under Dawakin Kudu District. Both sureties must also present proof of government employment and valid identification.

Until those conditions are met, the court ordered that the village head remain in custody. The matter was adjourned to August 28, 2025, to allow the complainants to present their witnesses.

Speaking after the sitting, one of the orphans behind the petition vowed to pursue justice, saying:
“He has no right to take what belongs to us.”

Efforts to obtain a reaction from the village head’s lawyer by the press were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
