The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, October 2, passed for first and second readings a bill proposing the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State and to Make Comprehensive Provisions for its Due Management and Administration and for Related Matters, 2024,” was introduced by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC – Ekiti Central).

During the plenary session, Senator Bamidele presented his lead debate, emphasizing the need for a specialized institution that would focus on agriculture and tropical studies in order to promote sustainable agricultural practices and contribute to the nation’s food security.

He highlighted that the university, if established, would serve as a center for research and development in agricultural science and tropical studies, benefitting not only Osun State but the entire country.

The bill received overwhelming support from the Senate as Senator Olarere Oyewunmi (APC – Osun West) seconded the motion, while other senators, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senator Solomon Adeola (APC – Lagos West), expressed their approval.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the initiative, noting that it would help bridge the gap in agricultural education and research in Nigeria. When he put the bill to a voice vote, it was unanimously agreed to be read for the first and second time.

The bill was subsequently referred to the Senate Committees on Agriculture and Tertiary Education and TETFUND for further legislative work and to report back to the Senate plenary within two weeks.

If established, the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji is expected to enhance research in agriculture, improve the quality of agricultural education, and provide specialized training for students in various aspects of tropical studies.

The proposed institution would contribute to the growth and development of agriculture in Nigeria, aligning with the federal government’s vision of economic diversification and sustainable development.
